Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the most common hormonal condition in Australian women. Caused by an imbalance of hormones in the body, it can cause symptoms such as:
- insulin resistance
- irregular/missed periods
- difficulty losing or maintaining weight
- increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
PCOS can be managed with simple changes to your nutrition and exercise.
These lifestyle changes can:
- improve management of your blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of diabetes
- help balance your mental health
- increase your energy levels
- reduce inflammation
- help manage weight
- reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.
Endometriosis is thought to be even more common than the statistics show! It is caused by cell growth outside of the uterus that can cause pain, inflammation, digestive difficulty, and bleeding.
The pain will often come in cycles, throwing off your health and fitness routine. It can also cause fatigue, stiffness through your core muscles and an overactive pelvic floor.
Your EP will help educate you on relaxing the overactive muscle groups while working on increasing your mobility. Regular exercise can also help with:
- Managing inflammatory effects of the condition – exercise causes an increase in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant markers
- Reducing estrogen levels
- Stretching and strengthening the affected muscle groups
- Creating a perfect program for your condition. Exercises based around Pilates & yoga are great to help effected muscles release & be safely stretched
- Managing energy levels
- Balancing out your mental health.
Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA)
HA is triggered by low energy in the body, leading to a loss of a regular period. If the balance between exercise levels and nutrition is consistently and dramatically out, mixed with psychological stressors, HA can be triggered. The side effects can lead to:
- decrease in body mineral density
- hormone imbalance
- poor mental health
- cardiovascular concerns.
Your EP, along with a multidisciplinary team of health experts, can ensure you are achieving a better balance of energy in and energy out. Your EP will monitor exercise levels, intensity and duration to gradually be able to guide you back to your normal exercise levels safely.
Exercise is hugely important to manage the treatment of any form of cancer. As you go through treatment and after treatment you may see several side effects including fatigue, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, and reduced energy levels mixed with disrupted sleep. Exercise during this time can:
- increase range of motion through the chest and shoulder
- increase strength back up following surgery
- reduce the risk of cancer recurrence
- increase quality of life through increased energy levels and mental health.
Working with an EP can help ensure your program is continuously adjusted according to your treatment progress and how you are feeling.
Osteoporosis is low bone mineral density – it occurs when the body is breaking down the bone tissue faster than it can replace it. This is common in women as they age, but particularly during the perimenopausal phase.
With a lower bone mineral density, there is an increase in risk of fractures during falls. A safe and effective exercise program can help preserve bone mineral density and also improve stability to avoid the risk of falling.
